Another Month of Extremes

August’s unprecedented climate disasters set records and highlighted the imminent threat of climate change.

Anomalous temperatures, wildfires, rapidly intensifying hurricanes and the obliteration of Lahaina could become commonplace.

The deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century ravaged Maui, claiming 115 lives with numerous still missing. The Gulf Coast’s extremely warm waters spawned the most rapidly intensifying Florida hurricane and the strongest to hit North Florida in 125 years.

Worldwide, extreme heat and flooding wreaked havoc, punctuated by melting glaciers in Alaska. These alarming events, driven by both global warming and El Niño, hint at a future with more frequent and intense “abnormal” summers.
